Autumn Impressions
Entrusting the bass accordion, which is usually played by a member of the accordion band, who usually performs the lowest voice with one hand, as a concertante is a brave and somewhat revealing act. In 1986, Krzanowski composed two pieces for this instrument: Relief VI and Autumn Impressions. It is worth adding that the compositions called Impressions were created over the years 1982–1986 and were intended for different casts (Winter Impressions and Spring Impressions – for accordion, Summer Impressions – for flute, clarinet and accordion, Autumn Impressions – for amplified bass accordion). Autumn impressions has been closed in a three-part arrangement. In the first movement (Allegretto tranquillo), two musical ideas clash: a growing series of chords performed in punctuated and syncopated rhythms, and Con passione, treated polymetrically, with lively, tritone-second figures. The second movement (Lento assai) is a slow, calm, yet free flow of overlapping dark melodies, containing the sounds of the second Messiaen mode. The final part (Tempo di ballo) is a sarcastic ballo with echoes of tango(?), habanera(?).
