Fugue-fantasy no. 1
[…] Fugue-fantasy No. 2 by Andrzej Krzanowski was created based on two traditional, historically related forms – fantasy and fugue. However, Andrzej Krzanowski made an unusual procedure here – an innovative synthesis: both forms are inextricably linked, creating a coherent whole in which freely shaped fragments of fantasy are intertwined with strictly imitative fugue fragments. The composer broke his fidelity to tradition in the formal sphere by using sequences and second-tritone structures in terms of the sound material and the harmonic plane, as well as a varied construction of counterpoints – from a motivic work drawing on a theme, through a rhythmically complex chord sequence, to the steady sound of one quadruple. Despite the principles of ordering the polyphonic matter, the work does not lack various means of expression (extreme dynamic registers, contrasting content), elements of bravado (ad libitum figures of cadenza) or sophisticated virtuosity. The synthesis of these phenomena, made by Andrzej Krzanowski in Fugue-fantasy No. 2, undoubtedly gives the work a unique and timeless dimension.
The composition was an obligatory piece in the first stage of 9th Accordion Competition Alkagran in Czechowice-Dziedzice in 2016.
